Chapter 24

When I reached the top of the stairs, I was still a little miffed at Drystan. Who drops a bombshell like that and walks away? If I was listening to my rational side, I would have realized that it was spite—the natural result of jealousy. But I was consumed with the reality that everyone knew more than I did. And Drystan would have withheld that information from me if the confrontation with Cadan hadn’t forced him to spill. That thought alone had me nearly boiling.

The song I was following kept me from internally combusting. As I climbed the stairs, its volume grew ever louder in an anticipatory frenzy. On the landing, the calamitous notes from the alto physically pulled me to the left. I picked up my skirts and ran, forgetting the drama of the episode downstairs. The hall ended in a split corridor. Rich, dark red wood paneled the walls, and ornate paintings decorated the spaces in-between the doors. Everyone looked the same in this labyrinth of a mansion, pulled from the pages of history and preserved so well that it was easy to become confused. But I didn’t need a guide; the music pulled me along the path and to the right this time.

I stopped before a dusky chestnut door, knowing that whatever was inside was here. The song was rising to a crescendo for my ears alone. My fingers grabbed for the door handle. My heart was hammering in my chest as I swung it open. I didn’t need to cast my eyes around the room in search of the source of that soul-consuming voice. It was coming from the box on top of the vanity.

I slipped into the empty room and rushed to the box, ripping the lid open. The lock had not been turned, which I afterwards realized was a stroke of sheer luck. Nestled amongst the other baubles and trinkets was a plain gold band with a shimmering black stone set in the center.

My fingers shook as I reached for it—and not from fear. It was the anticipation of the connection with something that was mine that delighted me, and it made me tremble with excitement. I picked the ring up and the music came to a heavenly close. I tried to slip it over my ring finger, but it was far too loose. Even when I moved it to my middle, it still wasn’t snug enough to stay on properly. My guess was that it was a male’s ring.

But as I held it up to the light, it took my breath away. Magic surged where my skin connected with the metal. My magic. Instantly, my body quivered from the power contained within the ring. It wasn’t from pain. In fact, it was the opposite! A soothing balm flowed from my fingertips up my arm and into my shoulder. The body aches suddenly began to ebb. I felt my eyes flare open in astonishment. Wow!

“You didn’t have to be so obvious about it, Little Lady,” said a voice from behind me.
